Residents of Zongo communities in Ghana have in recent times intensified their hate against the practice of same-sex relationships and many of the residents have been calling for attacks on gays and lesbians in the Zongos.
The Muslims, who predominantly populate the Zongos, perceive same-sex relationships as evil, since such relationships are abhorred by the teachings of the Holy Quran.
Administering severe punishment to gays and lesbians is considered as a holy endeavor every Muslim should not shy away from undertaking.
One cleric, Sheikh Abu Hamdan , said “Allah gets annoyed when males engage in sexual encounter and such disgusting encounter causes earthquake”.
According to him the destruction of the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by Allah was as the result of homosexuality and he called for a holy war against gays and lesbians in the country, particularly in Muslim dominated suburbs.
“Should we allow such a shame to continue in our communities against our holy teachings?” he asked. He answered that “certainly no,and we are very happy to chase away such idiots from our Zongo communities”.
Such incitement by the voices in Zongo communities led to the attack of Habib Mohammed Jibril
After being chased by a diehard Muslim group called crusaders against LGBT beat him , the leader of the gang nick named Abu Danger ,whilst Habib on the ground crying, Danger threatened to pour acid on him . The boys continue to hit him with sticks and stones with the slogan Allahu Akbar. The victim was saved by a group of surgeons with the aid of their macho driver, who tricked the gangs that, he was taken Habib to police station for further jail-punishment. According to one of the gangs, '' you are lucky today but whenever we find your location ,consider yourself dead". They warned to kill Habib Mohammed Jibril as well as his partner Ayub Osman should they see them around again.
’’ it’s a disgrace to our holy Muslim community’ ’Abu Danger fumed.
The group have stormed the zongo suburbs, including urging the youth to alert them should they see persons who are bisexual, GAY or Lesbians.’’
Many gays in Zongo communities notable Adamu Muftawu, Abdul Mujeeb Hakeem, Ramdan Abdulai, Frederick Acquah Aguuta , Habib Karim and others , who were afraid to disclose their sexual preferences for fear of attacks, have since left their known places of abodes with their current whereabouts unknown.
Youth of such Muslim communities are known to have inaugurated special task force to fight what they commonly describe as the importation of the “Whiteman’s culture”.
