Dr Kwame Nkrumah the first president of Ghana loved watches and spent exorbitantly on them. In 1961 he ordered a golden rolex watch inlaid with jewels and 44 diamonds from a Rolex dealer in Accra at a cost of £ 683.
Unfortunately the watch was not up to his standards, and he had it sent to Rolex headquarters in Switzerland for modification. He wanted it to be inscribed with the words " the first president of Ghana" and the fastener adjusted.
While Rolex agreed to meet some of his requests, they were unable to adjust the fastener because it was partented. “As the Rolex clasp with crown has been patented, we are not allowed to have any alterations made," Rolex informed him.
Rolex offered to refund Nkrumah , who was not happy, his money and to cancel the order. In doing so Rolex also asked him to consider the high quality of Rolex watches "and the good name we enjoy the world over."
The following year (1962) Nkrumah ordered two 18 gold karats watches from Audemars Priguet in Switzerland. He asked the company to engrave the two watches with the words "Dr Kwame Nkrumah."
A year later in 1963, He ordered four more golden watches from Switzerland, and asked that three should be inscribed with the words " Kwame Nkrumah" . The fourth one was a gift to his friend WEB DuBois on his 95th birthday.
