Member of Parliament for Assin Central and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is lamenting over the possibility of northerners dominating the 2024 presidential elections should Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerge winner of the NPP’s flagbearership contest.
A video of the MP which has gone viral on various social media platforms sees him lamenting over the possibility of the 2024 elections being an all-northern affair, making reference to the election of former President John Dramani Mahama as NDC’s candidate and the presence of Mahama Ayariga of All People’s Congress (APC) in the race.
He, therefore, questioned why the 2024 elections should be dominated by northerners, thus sending a discreet message to NPP delegates not to vote for Bawumia, a northerner.
“Mahama is a northerner. Ayariga is a northerner. Assuming Bawumia wins, he is also a northerner,” Kennedy Agyapong said in the viral radio interview.
“So in the face of Ghana politics, should it be only northerners? Ei what is this?” he added.
He continued: “Assuming the Vice President becomes the flagbearer, are you saying it should be only northerners? The party must watch this unfairness.”
“Northerners say when a northerner is not allowed to be the flagbearer, they won’t vote. Akans should also say that if an Alan is not elected they won’t vote,” he said.
It is not known when the interview was conducted, but surroundings of the studio suggest the interview was conducted on one of the local Ghanaian radio stations in the US.
Kennedy Agyapong is one of four people left for NPP’s final election in November to elect a flagbearer for the 2024 elections.
In the Super Delegates Conference, Kennedy Agyepong placed second behind Vice President Bawumia, who won the Super Delegates with a wide margin, winning over two-thirds of the votes.
